Elgin death still under investigation, officials say

An autopsy Monday determined a 20-year-old Elgin man died of multiple gunshot wounds, the Kane County Coroner's office said, but both police and the coroner's office have so far declined to label the death a homicide.

Daniel Figueroa was found Saturday at Prairie Street and Grove Avenue. Police had been called to the area, which is near Festival Park, to look into a possible disturbance.

"We're going to investigate it fully regardless of what they call it," Elgin Commander Colin Fleury said. "As far as our investigation goes, it doesn't really matter what it's called."

Figueroa's death may be the city's first homicide of the year, depending on evidence uncovered during the investigation by Elgin police, Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said.

"The preliminary cause of death is multiple gunshot wounds," Russell said. "We're just looking at the body and why the heart stopped beating at this point."

Once police and the coroner's office learn more information about the circumstances of his death, the coroner's office can determine the manner of death at an inquest, Fleury said.

Figueroa was found laying on the ground near the river, police said previously. Police do not think the shooting occurred in the park.

In the meantime, police said they have no information yet on any suspects, but the city's Major Investigations Division is pursuing leads. Anyone with tips can leave a message anonymously at (847) 695-4195 or text 847411 and type ELGINPD at the beginning along with other information.
