Police awaiting autopsy results of Elgin shooting victim
Elgin police are awaiting results from an autopsy of a 20-year-old man found shot to death early Saturday morning.
The Kane County coroner's office will determine after Monday's autopsy whether the death of Daniel Figueroa was a homicide, police said Sunday. If it is, it would be the city's first murder in 2015.
In the meantime, police said they have no information yet on any person of interest but are pursuing leads.
Figueroa, an Elgin resident, was found dead from gunshot wounds just before 3 a.m. Saturday at Prairie Street and Grove Avenue. Police had been called to the area, which is near Festival Park, to look into a possible disturbance.
"They discovered Mr. Figueroa lying on the ground near the river," police Cmdr. Colin Fleury said Saturday. Police do not think the shooting occurred in the park.
The city's Major Investigations Division is leading the investigation.
