Fire causes heavy damage to Palatine townhouse

Four Palatine residents were displaced after a fire left their three-story townhouse uninhabitable, authorities said Saturday.

No one was injured in the fire on the 100 block of Maple Street. Investigators are still trying to determine what caused it.

About 11:23 p.m. Friday, Palatine firefighters were called on a report of a basement fire at the townhouse. About four minutes later, the first arriving crews found smoke pouring from the front door.

Firefighters attacked the basement fire from inside the townhouse, while others searched throughout the smoke-filled structure for any trapped residents, the Palatine Fire Department said in a news release.

Nearly two dozen firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. By 11:38 p.m., the fire was declared under control.

An estimate of the damage was not immediately available.
