Des Plaines residents hear 'crackling,' escape fire

A fire caused about $50,000 in a damage to a one-story Des Plaines home Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The residents safely escaped after hearing a "crackling" noise outside and calling 911 about 1 p.m., Des Plaines Battalion Chief Mike Tripicchio said.

There were no injuries to firefighters.

Investigators believe the cause of the fire started with an electrical source outside the home on the 1100 block of Van Buren Avenue, Tripicchio said.

The fire spread from the exterior to the attic and roof. The home will be uninhabitable until roof repairs can be made.

The Des Plaines Emergency Management Agency has arranged temporary housing for the family, Tripicchio said.

The department continues to investigate.
