Driver charged after pedestrian hit in Elgin

A 73-year-old woman was taken to the hospital after being struck by a taxi on the 800 block of Summit in Elgin, near the Elgin Fresh Market.

Elgin police said the driver has been ticketed and charged with an additional misdemeanor.

The accident occurred at 12:45 p.m. Friday.

Police said the woman was crossing the street, when she stopped in a turn lane. Meanwhile, the taxi was pulling out of a parking lot and struck the woman, resulting in an injury to her leg.

The driver, 51-year-old Rigoberto Beiza, of the 1100 block of Borden Drive, Elgin, was charged with driving on a suspended driver's license and ticketed for failure to yield from a private drive.

There were no further details on the woman's condition.
