One man dead, three others rescued after canoe tips in Ingleside's Wooster Lake

A 35-year-old Chicago man died and three other people were rescued after the canoe they were in flipped over on Wooster Lake in Ingleside, authorities said.

Mirza D. Muzaofarov was fishing with another adult and two children when the boat capsized Sunday about 6 p.m., Lake County sheriff's Sgt. Curtis Gregory said.

Muzaofarov, of the 5200 block of N. East River Road, was with his two sons, ages 10 and 11, and a family friend, Gregory said. Muzaofarov stood up in the back of the canoe, causing it to capsize, Gregory said.

Lake County Deputy Coroner Orlando Portillo said the preliminary cause of death is drowning, but toxicology reports are pending. He added alcohol was a factor in the accident.

Witnesses on shore saw the canoe capsize and launched a boat to rescue the victims in the water, Gregory said. Wooster Lake is about 20 feet deep in that area, officials said.

Three of the four were rescued, Gregory said, but Muzaofarov slipped beneath the water.

None of the victims was wearing a life preserver, Gregory said. The water temperature was about 49 degrees at the time of the accident, he said.

Gregory said earlier reports that an unidentified person jumped into the water and swam out to help the victims was not entirely accurate. He said the person launched a boat to paddle out to the area, then may have gone into the water to search for Muzaofarov.

Five area fire departments joined the search for Muzaofarov using divers and "side scanning sonar," Gregory said. Muzaofarov's body was recovered at 9:20 p.m. Sunday and he was pronounced dead at 9:36 p.m.

He was taken to the Lake County coroner's facility in Waukegan, Gregory said. The investigation continues through the Lake County sheriff's office criminal investigations division.
