Palatine man faces federal tax evasion charges

A Palatine man is among 11 Chicago and suburban residents charged with separate federal income tax crimes.

William Daddano, 58, the owner of a real estate appraisal businesses, was indicted April 7 on two charges of tax evasion and two counts of filing false income tax returns.

Federal prosecutors say Daddano avoided paying taxes by having his companies issue checks to an account under the name of a defunct company, Real Property Valuation, and used that money as his personal income.

Daddano reportedly diverted $350,000 in 2008 and $280,000 in 2009, years during which he filed false corporate and personal tax returns, prosecutors said.

Daddano will be arraigned at a later date. If convicted of all charges, he faces a maximum sentence of 16 years in prison. Each count also carries a maximum fine of $250,000 or twice the defendant's gain, prosecutors said.

"Federal tax prosecutions occur throughout the year but at this time of year it is especially prudent to remind taxpayers of the importance of voluntary compliance with their tax obligations," U.S. Attorney Zachary T. Fardon said in a prepared statement.

In addition to incarceration, fines and civil penalties, defendants convicted of tax fraud may be responsible for any taxes and interest due, as well as restitution if warranted, Fardon said.

Other suburban residents facing tax fraud charges include: Leopold Rodriguez, 42, of Bolingbrook, indicted on a charge of tax evasion and filing false federal income tax returns; Ronald Taylor, 49, of Evanston, charged with filing false claims and theft of government funds; and Sol K. Winer, 75, of Highland Park, charged with filing a false income tax return after, authorities say, he underrepresented his total income for 2011.
