Two students hurt moving tarp caught in wind at Batavia High School

Batavia fire officials said high winds were a contributing factor Friday afternoon when two students were injured attempting to move tarp at an athletic field at Batavia High School.

Firefighters were called to respond to a "traumatic injury" at the football fields just west of the high school at 3:15 p.m.

On arrival, firefighters learned that the two were injured while attempting to move a tarp on the fence line.

"They were taken by the tarp and the wind and were injured," said Batavia firefighter/paramedic Steven Smit.

The students were taken to the hospital and the incident was under control at 3:25 p.m., firefighters said.

Smit said further information about the students or their condition would violate confidentiality rules and could not be released.

In its news release, the Batavia Fire Department advised everyone that if caught outside during high winds, one should:

* Take shelter next to a building

* Watch for flying debris

* Stay clear of roadways or railroad tracks if you can be blown into their path

* Avoid working on roofs, or elevated areas

* Use handrails if available

* Watch for downed lines and tree limbs, and avoid them.
