Author tells mom's story of life as a WAC in World War II

The Des Plaines History Center invites residents to its April Coffee Talk, "The Journey to Mollie's War: From Inspiration to Publication," from 1:30-2:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, at the History Center, 781 Pearson St.

The event is one of many war-related programs offered by the History Center this year to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Author of the book "Mollie's War," Cyndee Schaffer will talk about her mother Mollie Weinstein Schaffer's service as a WAC (Women's Army Corps) from 1943-1945. Schaffer says the book "details Mollie's experiences assigned to the Medical Intelligence division of the U.S. Army, living under perilous conditions, assisting the forces fighting but also taking advantage of her surroundings."

In addition, she will talk about working together with her mother and their process of getting Mollie's inspiring story published.

"It's so important to remember the roles people played in the war effort," said Philip Mohr, curator of the History Center. "Mollie's story reminds us of the extraordinary effort put forth by women in the WACs." A $3 donation is suggested.

After the Coffee Talk, guests are welcome to view the exhibit, "World War II: Des Plaines and the War Against Fascism," which includes several military uniforms worn by Des Plaines residents, artifacts donated from the war, and information about home life and industry during World War II. The History Center has started a guest book and would love to include your comments about the exhibit and what life was like for your family during the war years.
