Fire damages house near downtown Elgin

Elgin fire officials are still investigating the cause of a fire Saturday morning that damaged a house near downtown.

Nobody was injured in the blaze that started at 11:40 a.m. in an upstairs bedroom of a house on the 200 block of North Gifford Street, fire officials said in a news release.

The residents were home on the first floor when they heard the smoke detectors go off. They told fire officials that nobody had been upstairs within an hour and no candles or space heaters were going.

The fire caused an estimated $10,000 in damage. Fire officials said they don't suspect arson.
