Student with BB gun apprehended at Schaumburg H.S.

A student at Schaumburg High School was taken into custody Tuesday morning while in possession of a BB gun.

According to a message sent out to parents and students, several students reported seeing the male student with what appeared to be a gun in his waistband at about 11:45 a.m.

School administrators acted quickly to secure the student, whose weapon was determined to be a BB gun that had not been used in a threatening manner, according to the message from Principal Tom Little.

Schaumburg police have been investigating with Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 officials to determine why the student brought the gun to school and whether any other students were involved.

“It's being treated as a disorderly conduct,” Schaumburg police Lt. Shawn Green said. “It seems to be that it was a horseplay incident that began off campus.”

Though the student did walk into the school building with the BB gun visible in his waistband, he never pointed it at anyone, Green said.

Little commended the quick thinking of the students who reported the matter, and encouraged others to follow their example by immediately reporting anything suspicious to authorities.
