Authorities: Sugar Grove man had $26,000 in cocaine

A 39-year-old Sugar Grove man faces prison after authorities searched his townhouse and found an estimated $26,000 in cocaine and items such as scales and packaging materials, according to authorities and court records.

Angel Castro Jr., of the 100 block of East Park Avenue, faces felony charges with possession of cocaine and possession of cocaine with intent to deliver, and faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

Castro was arrested March 25 after authorities searched his townhouse and seized 132 grams of cocaine, four scales, kilogram wrappers, and plastic bags with marijuana residue on it, according to Kane County court records.

Lt. Pat Gengler, spokesman for the Kane County sheriff's office, said the drugs have an estimated street value of $26,000 and were hidden in cereal boxes in Castro's home.

Prosecutors filed a motion requiring Castro to prove his bail money was from legitimate sources and not drug proceeds.

“The state is not aware of any legitimate source of income consistent with the defendant's ability to post the required bond,” prosecutors wrote in their motion. “The defendant informed police that he does not work.”

Prosecutors also noted in court papers Castro was involved in drug case from 2009 involving 254 kilograms of cocaine in Texas.

Castro posted 10 percent of $100,000 bail March 26 and is due in court April 17.

A message left with Castro's defense attorney, Richard Mottweiler, was not immediately returned.
