Let tollway directors do their job

The front page Daily Herald article on March 23 describing state Sen. Jim Oberweis's tirade over speed limit decisions on area tollways is a good example of overreach and micromanagement on the part of an elected official.

I applauded the law raising the maximum allowable speed limit to 70 mph on Illinois Interstate highways when it was enacted. But now Sen. Oberweis should let the experts make their determination as to what are the maximum safe speeds on the various roadways in the metropolitan Chicago area. That is their job. That is what they are trained to do.

It is egotistical of the senator to think that he knows more about highway safety than these experts.

Mr. Oberweis makes great ice cream. I doubt that the traffic engineers employed by the tollway authority would endeavor to advise him about how to improve his product. He should extend the same respect to the engineers, whose only objective is public safety.
