3 pigs perish in morning Huntley barn fire

Three pigs perished in an early Monday barn fire in Huntley, a fire official said.

Neighbors reported the fire at about 12:50 a.m. on a family farm in the area of Coyne Station and Ernesti roads.

"It was a stand-alone barn, unattached, for livestock," said Fire Chief Ken Caudle of the Huntley Fire Protection District.

About 20 cattle on the farm were saved unharmed, he added.

The family was away at the time of the fire. The fire did not spread to other barns on the property, Caudle said.

It took firefighters less than two hours to extinguish the flames with the help of six neighboring fire departments, including Algonquin, Hampshire, Fox River Grove and Rutland-Dundee Township.

The cause of the fire is undetermined. Damages are estimated at $100,000.

"There's nothing left for us to investigate to figure out what it was," Caudle said. "It was accidental. There is nothing fishy here."
