Des Plaines alternative fuel program on hold

An alternative fuel pilot program in Des Plaines is on hold for now, since aldermen can't agree how soon to put the program in place, if at all.

The city has been considering making changes to three city vehicles that would enable them to run on compressed natural gas. Alderman Mark Walsten has said it would provide environmental benefits and cost savings over time, and sought to approve a contract this week with Buffalo Grove-based Advanced VTech to make the conversions.

However, the council voted 5-4, with Mayor Matt Bogusz casting the tiebreaking vote, to direct city staff to seeks bids on the conversions.
