New trustee appointed to Lombard village board

A new trustee was appointed to the Lombard village board Thursday, filling a spot that was vacant for only a few days.

The village board unanimously approved the appointment of Robyn Pike, a candidate in the 2015 election, to the District 5 seat.

The 30-year-old mother does interactive marketing for Easter Seals and is the only name that will appear on the ballot for the District 5 seat.

Pike was being challenged by marketing and communications consultant Lori Solyom until late January, when Solyom said she was withdrawing from the race to serve on a districtwide legislative advisory committee.

The District 5 seat was previously held by Laura Fitzpatrick, who decided not to run for re-election after serving on the board for eight years. She announced the submission of her resignation letter, which was effective March 1, at the last village board meeting.

This is the second time in less than a month that a new trustee has been appointed to the board. At the last village board meeting Bill Johnston was appointed to the District 4 seat, which was held by Peter Breen until his resignation in December.

Breen, who is now serving as the state representative for the 48th district, was present at Thursday's meeting. He gave a brief legislative update and was recognized by the board for his service as trustee.

"Serving any elective office is always a great honor, but serving on a municipal board is one of the most important positions in elective government," he said after congratulating Pike and Johnston on their new positions.

"You really are the tip of the spear."

Pike has served on the village's community promotion and tourism committee and has volunteered for a number of organizations, including the American Cancer Society, Aunt Martha's Family Services, The Clothesline Project, Habitat For Humanity and DuPage Young Republicans. In a Daily Herald candidate questionnaire she said if elected, she looked forward to finding "synergies within the departments" of the village, to ensure village resources are being used efficiently.
