Pedestrian killed by train near Round Lake

A person was struck and killed by an outbound Metra train Thursday night between the Round Lake and Long Lake stations, authorities said.

The unidentified victim was struck just before 6 p.m. near the intersection of Fairfield Road and Long Lake Road, which runs parallel to the Milwaukee District North Line tracks.

"It was pretty much between the two stations," said Meg Reile, a Metra spokeswoman. "It was at least mile from (either) station. It was no where in the vicinity where you could construe the person was going to either station."

The crash involved train No. 2129, which left Chicago at 4:40 p.m. and was due in Fox Lake at 6:04 p.m. The train was delayed 80 minutes during the crash scene investigation, and other outbound and inbound trains also experienced significant delays, Reile said.

Trains were still moving at walking speed hours after the crash, until Metra officials could receive permission from police to resume normal operations.
