Make mobile devices inoperable in cars
I have enjoyed your two-part series "Fatal Distraction." I have many close calls myself due to other drivers being distracted while on their phone.
I think automobile manufacturers could make things a lot safer by making phones and other distracting equipment inoperable, with the exception of 911 calls. With current technology, I would think that a way could be found to make phones and other distracting devices inoperative unless the car is in "park," perhaps the car motor creating static or noise on phones and jumbling text messages while the car is in any other gear except "park." Other devices that come with the car would simply not work unless the car also is in park.
