Funeral for Hesburgh to be held Wednesday at Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - The funeral for the Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, the University of Notre Dame's president for 35 years, will be held Wednesday.

Hesburgh died Thursday night.

A university spokesman says the funeral conducted by the Congregation of Holy Cross will be a simple service, as for any priest in the order. The invitation-only service will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the South Bend campus.

A procession from the basilica to the campus cemetery will be open to the public.

A wake for invited guests will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the basilica. Visitation is scheduled for 12-6 p.m. Tuesday and 9 p.m. Tuesday until 10 a.m. Wednesday. A tribute will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Joyce Center on campus.
