Sayad looks like the better candidate

I attended the Feb. 9 forum where ward aldermanic candidates Dick Sayad and Mark Setzer were to give their reasons for serving people in the 4th ward and the city. It was disappointing to find that Mr. Setzer was unavailable, having gone to a Cub Scout meeting instead.

Mr. Sayad impressed me very much with his knowledge of the city and what is going on in and around it. He gave ideas and thoughts about infrastructure improvements, flood control, attracting new businesses, reducing certain taxes (thanks to casino receipts), and saving interest expenses by reducing the debt. He has served the city for 12 years with a wealth of knowledge, he is conscientious and hard working. He has my vote.

I did not meet Mr. Setzer. He should really reveal more information on his health and background. With little experience in government it would seem to be a priority for him to speak out and explain his views and present his credentials to the voters.

Our mayor is backing Mr. Setzer possibly because of differences of opinion with Mr. Sayad. Such differences coupled with restraint and courtesy bring about discussions, compromise, and a fair representation of all parties. That is not possible if one person or one group has full control.

Good government requires citizens to be aware and to speak out. Rebuttals and other opinions hopefully attract more attention and can bring out more voters to do their duty. There is a saying that we should use our heads and not sit at home on Election Day. Heads we win, tails we lose.
