Too cold? Not for pickup hockey in Naperville!
Ears and faces were a little cold for a dozen skating men who stayed warm moving around during a Saturday morning pickup hockey game at the Naperville Park District's outdoor skating rink at Centennial Park.
The players ranged in age from their teens to late 50s.
"We've got a good mix of guys out here today, which makes it a lot of fun. No one takes it too seriously, everyone has a good time and that's the best part about it," said Chris Hill, 22, an assistant hockey coach at Waubonsie Valley High School.
"Usually we come out here for about two to three hours until we get hungry and need to get food. When you're out there moving around, you don't notice the cold as much," Hill said.
Charles Collins, 15, of Naperville was the youngest player during the morning skate.
"I'll stay out here until the temperature gets too cold, or I'm dead tired. Other than that I'll play forever," Collins said.
The weather knifed through goalie Steve Pausche, 58, of Downers Grove.
"I can usually stay out here two to three hours, but not today," Pausche said.
Leo Hart, 52, of Naperville, who has been playing hockey at Centennial Park since 1995, prefers the outdoor rink for several reasons.
"The ice gets really hard, the puck goes faster, fresh air and sunshine - you can't beat it," Hart said.
