200 trees come down in Lombard's Madison Meadow

Roughly 200 trees have been removed from Lombard's Madison Meadow Park in an effort to combat the Emerald Ash Borer.

Officials say more than 1,000 trees on Lombard Park District grounds have been infested with the destructive insects since 2012.

In Madison Meadow, the park district's goal is to plant two trees for every one removed. Planting is expected to occur within 12 months from the date of removal.

Officials say a variety of trees will be planted to diversify the district's trees and lessen the future impact of invasive insects or disease.

According to the park district's website, trees still need to be removed at Lombard Common, Old Grove, Southland, Terrace View, Vista Pond and Westmore Woods.

Trees that are scheduled to be cut down will be marked with green paint. Once the green dot appears, the tree is set to be removed within 14 days.

Residents who have any questions about the park district's Emerald Ash Borer management plan may call the parks department at (630) 639-3344.
