Des Plaines man charged with 5th DUI
A Des Plaines man with four DUI convictions on his record faces a possible fifth stemming from his arrest Sunday on a charge of aggravated drunken driving.
Dennis Barry, 58, was ordered held on $250,000 bail Monday. Aggravated DUI is a class 1, non-probationable felony, according to Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Gbenga Longe.
Palatine police stopped Barry about 2 a.m. Sunday after he ran a red light, Longe said. Barry, who refused to take a Breathalyzer test, failed field sobriety tests and had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, Longe said.
Barry told the officer he had consumed three beers, Longe said.
Barry has 13 prior arrests for driving on a suspended or revoked license, Longe said.
If convicted, he faces up to 14 years in prison. Barry next appears in court on Feb. 27.
