Roselle home badly damaged in fire
A Roselle family's home was extensively damaged by a fire Monday morning, but no injuries were reported, fire officials said.
Firefighters responded to the single-family, two-story home in the 500 block of Newcastle Drive at about 11:30 a.m., Battalion Chief Ted Matuszewski said.
"When we pulled up on the scene there was heavy smoke showing to the rear of the house," he said.
Firefighters assisted from Carol Stream, Addison, Bloomingdale, Hanover Park, Wheaton, Bartlett and Schaumburg.
"It was a big fire, a heavy fire," Matuszewski said. "When the other companies were responding they could see the header (smoke) from quite a distance away. The guys did a good job."
No damage estimates were available, and the cause is still under investigation. The home is uninhabitable, he said.
It's the fourth fire Roselle firefighters have handled since Jan. 31 - three homes and a small fire at the Lake Park West High School - although officials don't believe they're connected.
"It's a busy time of season as far as people being careful and furnaces running and things like that," Matuszewski said. "Sometimes people have to exercise a bit more caution in the winter months."
