Strong showing from Balcerak, Viator in conference meet

Brother Rice scored 373 points to take top honors in the Metro Catholic Athletic Conference boys swimming meet on Saturday, where St. Viator freshman Michael Balcerak provided further evidence that he's among the state's elite freestylers.

Balcerak placed second in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing in 47.27. The race was won by Loyola junior Chris Kearney in 46.81; he also won the 200 free in 1:42.92.

Balcerak also had legs on all the Lions' relays, which turned in season-best times. The medley of Shea Boyer, Matt Stack, Balcerak and Brandon Calderon finished in 1:45.30; the 200 free relay of Balcerak, Boyer, Calderon and Keegan Finn finished in 1:31.94 and the 400 free relay of Finn, Boyer, Mitchell Warren and Balcerak in 3:24.73.

Earning individual all-conference honors for St. Viator were Balcerak in the 100 free plus Finn in the 100 fly (56.68, seventh) and Boyer in the 100 back (57.78, eighth).

St. Ignatius scored 322 points and placed second, followed by Loyola (321) and host Fenwick (272). Marmion (212) was fifth, Benet (169) sixth and St. Viator (156) seventh.

Will Kamps had a second-place finish for Marmion in the 500 free (4:48.71), and Benet got a third-place effort from J.P. McAveeney in the 100 breast (1:03.52).
