Chicago man charged with Elgin home invasion

A Cook County judge set bail at $350,000 Thursday for a Chicago man currently on parole who has been charged with breaking into an Elgin home and threatening the owner with a firearm.

Prosecutors said Joshua Hampton, 25, was armed with a gun when he and a female co-defendant entered the home of an Elgin man about 1 a.m. Nov. 28.

Hampton ordered the homeowner to lie on the floor while he and the co-defendant took a 60-inch television and a Sony PlayStation, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney David Shin.

The defendants also took $60 and an iPhone from the homeowner, whom they ordered to wait in the basement until they left, after which he called police, Shin said.

Hampton is currently in custody in Kane County on armed robbery charges. His co-defendant is scheduled to appear in bond court Monday, Shine said.

Authorities say last year Hampton and a co-defendant attempted to rob another Elgin man who had responded to an online ad for an escort.

The homeowner in the most recent case recognized Hampton from when his mug shot appeared in the newspaper after the robbery arrest, Shin said.

Hampton's background includes 2011 convictions for manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance near a school and manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance, for which he was sentenced to seven years in prison, Shin said. He also has several misdemeanor convictions for criminal trespass and criminal damage to property.

If convicted of the most recent charge, he faces up to 30 years in prison.

Hampton next appears in court on March 13.
