Fire damages apartment garages in Schaumburg, closes Algonquin Road

A fire destroyed three connected garages and left several buildings uninhabitable Wednesday afternoon at the International Village apartment complex in Schaumburg.

The fire also forced officials to temporarily shut down lanes of traffic along Algonquin Road between Meacham and Plum Grove roads because of icing over the roadway caused by the firefighting efforts and a related water main break.

Officials declared five apartment buildings at International Village temporarily uninhabitable because of the lack of water service. They could not say how many residents were affected and International Village management declined to comment.

No one was injured in the fire, which did not spread to any apartment buildings, Schaumburg police Lt. Shawn Green said.

The affected structure included five connected, two-car garages. The fire destroyed two cars parked inside the garages, and two others sustained smoke damage, officials said.

The origin and cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Firefighters received the call at 12:04 p.m., and the fire was extinguished about two hours later.
