Iowa man pleads not guilty in Volo road rage stabbing

An Iowa man pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges he stabbed a man in the leg during a road rage attack in Volo.

Scott Allen Schultz, 45, of Cedar Rapids, faces charges of aggravated battery resulting in great bodily harm, aggravated battery in a public place and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon for the Sept. 17 attack at Volo Village Road and Route 12.

Schultz was released from Lake County jail after posting the required 10 percent of his $25,000 bail, authorities said.

He was arrested on a warrant by police in Morrison, Illinois, near the Iowa border, hours after the attack, authorities said.

The road rage attack started when the victim was driving north on Route 12 near Volo and Schultz came up from behind and began blowing his horn, said Cynthia Vargas, communication manager from the Lake County State's Attorneys Office.

The victim and Schultz began arguing between their cars while driving, then started cutting each other off, Vargas said.

They jumped out of their cars at Volo Village Road and were involved in a fist fight, she said. During the fight, Schultz pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim in the leg, Vargas said.

A deputy was called to the scene and found the victim bleeding from a major artery, authorities said. The deputy applied a tourniquet to control the bleeding, and radioed for help from paramedics.

The victim was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he was treated and released.

Authorities said a call was broadcast to police agencies, and Schultz's vehicle was spotted by deputies from the Whiteside County Sheriff's Office in Morrison. He was taken into custody, and returned to Lake County, authorities said.

Schultz's trial is scheduled for June 22. He is due in court March 12.
