2 arrested in St. Charles tobacco shop robbery

St. Charles police have arrested two 20-year-old men on charges they robbed a tobacco store Jan. 4 at gunpoint and knife point.

Rayshawn Vonperbandt and Jacob M. Fahey, both of St. Charles, face up to 30 years in prison if convicted of felony armed robbery.

They were being held at the Kane County jail on bails of $100,000 and $130,000, respectively, and must post $10,000 and $13.000 to be released while the cases are pending.

According to police, two men entered the Tobacco ands Gift Store, 1556 E. Main St., at about 6:27 p.m. Jan. 4, one armed with a gun and the other a knife.

The two men stole a key and wallet from a store clerk, along with items from a locked display case, before running away, police said.

The investigation eventually pointed to Fahey. of the 500 block of South 12th Avenue, and Vonperbandt, of the 200 block of North 15th Street, and they were both arrested Wednesday.

Fahey also was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer and misdemeanor resisting arrest, according to police and court records.

The aggravated battery charge carries a penalty of anywhere from probation to seven years in prison.

St. Charles police say Fahey fought with detectives as they tried to arrest him.

According to court records, Vonperbandt was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia after a traffic stop in October 2012 in South Elgin. He pleaded guilty, was fined $750, and was ordered to perform community service, records show.

Both are due in court Feb. 5.
