Would GOP goals help our nation?

John Boehner seems to constantly criticize President Obama and any plans he has to help the people in this country.

President Obama's immigration plan to stop deportation of the parents of children born in this country is designed to stop separating parents and children. Orphaning the children relegates them to our overburdened child welfare system. Granting workers sick leave or family leave is distasteful to the Republican Party. Providing free tuition for a junior college education is also soundly criticized by Mr. Boehner. However, at least these are concrete goals to which the citizens of this country can relate. Mr. Boehner responds with a Republican five step plan.

The plan aims at reforming the tax code, solving spending problems, reforming the legal system, reforming the regulatory system and improving the education system. These are lofty goals indeed. Except they can take a lifetime to achieve at the pace our Congress works. Plus, they are not really goals at all since they do not stipulate what steps to take or how to achieve these goals. Would achieving these lofty goals really help our country?

Well, it depends on what reforms the Republican Party pushes. Reforming the tax code so the middle class loses the home mortgage deduction while the superrich get hidden tax breaks would not be much of an improvement. Reforming spending problems by reducing spending on Social Security and infrastructure improvement, while increasing spending for the military and the defense contractors, would not benefit the average citizen. Privatizing education in this country goes against the Constitution and enables private companies to draw a profit from public taxes used to educate our youth. How does ensuring a private company a profit from our tax dollars enable a better education for our youth?
