Transformer, utility pole catch fire in Elk Grove Village

A utility pole and a transformer caught fire Tuesday afternoon in Elk Grove Village.

The transformer fire, which was also on a utility pole 3 feet from the B & M Plastic Inc. building at 2001 Arthur Ave., was reported around 4 p.m., Elk Grove Village Fire Department Battalion Chief Mark Sellers said. "We initially had Elk Grove, Wood Dale and Des Plaines there," Sellers said. "...We were concerned with the fire moving from the pole into the building itself."

One transformer had exploded, Sellers said, and the transformer and pole were both on fire.

Crews evacuated the building and contacted ComEd.

"We cooled the exposure, which is a term for the building itself, until they arrived so the exposure wouldn't catch on fire," Sellers said.

Once ComEd arrived, electricity to that area was shut down. Firefighters were then able to put out the fire. Once the fire was extinguished, electricity was restored to the area except to the B & M Plastic Inc. building.

ComEd expected to have the power restored to that building "late tonight or early tomorrow morning," Sellers said Tuesday evening.

No one was injured, and the building did not incur any fire damage, Sellers said.
