Ghana captain Gyan misses Senegal game with malaria

MONGOMO, Equatorial Guinea (AP) - Captain Asamoah Gyan was left out of Ghana's team for its opening game at the African Cup of Nations after being diagnosed with malaria.

In Gyan's absence, new coach Avram Grant named forward Andre Ayew as captain against Senegal in Monday's first game in Group C in Mongomo.

The Ghana Football Association said Gyan was diagnosed with a "mild bout" of malaria over the weekend. The forward spent a night in the hospital in Equatorial Guinea's eastern city of Mongomo but was released to recover at the team base.

Ghana also faces South Africa and tournament favorite Algeria in what's viewed as the toughest group at the African Cup.
