Armstrong Park flood relief project nearing completion

A $12.5 million flood relief project at Armstrong Park in Carol Stream is ahead of schedule and nearing completion, DuPage County officials said Monday.

The project involves building two reservoirs. When water rises in nearby Klein Creek, water will move into the smaller reservoir and then, once it reaches a certain elevation, be pumped into the second, much larger reservoir.

A siphon will transfer the water back into Klein Creek further downstream.

County officials said the reservoirs have been built but crews still need to finish placing concrete mats on the inside slopes of the larger reservoir to protect it from erosion.

Concrete buildings have been constructed for the pumps to move the water, but the pumps themselves aren't scheduled for installation until February.

Crews already have installed roughly 2,200 feet of the siphon pipe and are almost done creating the system that will slow down the water coming from the pipe so the vegetation does not erode.

Officials said they expect the flood-relief system to be functional this spring.

The project is a joint effort between the village, DuPage County Stormwater Management and Carol Stream Park District.
