First Winter Farmers Market to open in Batavia

With the success of the Batavia Farmers Market on River Street, Batavia MainStreet sought out a way to continue the season for local farmers, vendors and patrons.

On Saturdays, Jan. 10 through May 23, downtown Batavia will have its very own Winter Farmers Market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Thanks to Wendy and Gaetano DiBenedetto, owners of Gaetano's Batavia, the Winter Farmers Market will be inside their restaurant at 15 E. Wilson St.

"Our farmers market vendors have asked every year if we could do a Winter Market," states Joi Cuartero, executive director of Batavia MainStreet. "Unfortunately, we never had an indoor location that could host several vendors at a time. Then Gaetano and Wendy approached us about using their space."

The market will be cozy, as space is limited, and will start off with around 8-10 vendors to include various meats, baked goods, EVOO and balsamics, eggs, organic breads, honey, micro greens and hydroponic herbs, and even treats for man's best friend.

"We are excited to bring a Winter Farmers Market to the community," continues Jamie Saam, who is on the board of Batavia MainStreet and occasional market manager. "As a regular at the farmers market, I cannot wait to be able to purchase some of these items year round."
