Federal funds to pay for Des Plaines sidewalks, home repairs

Des Plaines is getting $283,919 in federal community block grant funds to build new sidewalks and repair houses, among other programs.

The city was awarded the annual grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development earlier this month.

Chan Yu, the city's associate planner, said more than $93,000 will be used to install sidewalks in areas where they don't currently exist, and $91,400 will be dedicated to a housing rehab program, which provides funds to low-income homeowners who make house repairs. Another $56,700 will be for planning and administrative costs, and $42,500 will be for public service programs such as senior employment, child care, housing and counseling.
