Stevenson grad Ohnsted is on his game for Augsburg

Mack Ohnsted has played a key role for the Augsburg men's hockey team in its hot start to the 2014-15 season.

The Stevenson High School graduate led the Auggies' offense with a 3-point weekend (2 goals, 1 assist) when Augsburg (Minneapolis, Minn.) split with No. 13-ranked Saint John's.

In the win, the junior forward had the overtime game-winning goal over the Johnnies.

For his performance, Ohnsted won the MIAC men's hockey athlete of the week award.

Ohnsted delivered one of the highlights of Augsburg's season when his goal in overtime snapped a 5-5 tie and gave the Auggies a 6-5 road upset over 13th-ranked Saint John's.

His hot streak continued the next day as he had a hand in both Augsburg's goals with a goal and an assist in a 4-2 home loss.

This season, Ohnsted is tied for the MIAC lead in both points (14) and goals (8).

His 6 assists also rank in the top 10 on the MIAC leader board. Ohnsted now has 49 points (16 goals, 33 assists) in 61 career games.

Augsburg is 6-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The Auggies are currently locked in a three-way tie for third with 9 points in the conference standings. Ohnsted and the Auggies will take the rest of the year off for finals and the holidays and return to the ice with a pair of home nonconference games against Stevens Point and Eau Claire on Jan. 9-10.

Women's basketball

Concordia University-Chicago junior Morgan Jahnke (Grant) struck for 8 straight points on a 3-point play, a steal and layup, and a long 3-pointer to give the Cougars a 29-19 lead on way to a 69-50 victory over Alverno College.

Jahnke also had 14 points and 5 assists in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game. The Cougars are 4-2 and 1-1.

• In Augustana's 58-55 win at Central, Vikings sophomore Olivia Mayer (Libertyville) collected 6 points with 8 assists, 6 rebounds and 3 steals in 36 minutes.

A layup by Central with 14:36 to play tied the game at 34-34, but it took Mayer (team-high 26 assists this season) just four seconds to assist on a basket that out the Vikings ahead for good.

Clinging to a 41-40 lead at the eight-minute mark, Augustana got a key offensive rebound from senior Valerie VanRoeyen (Libertyville) to keep a possession alive that eventually ended with a 3-pointer that gave the Vikes a 44-40 advantage.

• Lake Forest sophomore forward Brie Majkowski (Wheeling) led the Forresters with 14 points and 7 rebounds in a 52-37 victory over visiting Lawrence University.

Majkowski shot 5-of-11 from the field and 4-of-6 from the foul line for her second-highest scoring output of the season. She is now second on the team with 9.0 points per game.

Womens' track

Lewis University senior Amy Polhemus (Lake Zurich) was part of the runner-up and NCAA provisional setting 4x400 relay (3:53.59) at the GVSU Early Bird.

Men's track

Lewis University's Andre Barnes (Prospect) and teammate Isaac Jean-Paul (Warren) captured the inaugural Great Lakes Valley Conference Indoor Track And Field 'Athlete of the Week' awards.

Jean-Paul (Warren) earned his second career GLVC Indoor Field accolade after a pair of second-place finishes. He set a provisional mark in the high jump with a leap of 6'11 3/4" (2.13m) and added another runner-up showing in the long jump (22-5¾"/6.85m).

"Andre and Isaac really got the men's team going early in the meet," said Lewis head men's track and field coach Dana Schwarting. "Within a few minutes of each other, they both posted top marks in the country.

"You could really feel the team energized after they were done with their events. We knew what they looked like in practice, but it is a great testament to both of them, that they didn't let the nerves and excitement of the first meet get to them."

Men's soccer

Butler freshman Eric Leonard (Fremd) was chosen to the Big East all-rookie team. He played in 14 matches for the Bulldogs this season, including 12 as a starter, and he finished sixth on the team in shots (15).

He scored his first collegiate goal in Butler's 2-1 victory over Evansville in September.

Leonard began playing soccer at Palatine Celtic Soccer Club and competed the last 10 years at Sockers FC Chicago in Palatine.

He continues his studies in Biomedical Engineering.

Butler finished the season with a 6-7-5 record, including victories over No. 7 Marquette and No. 11 Providence. The Bulldogs were eighth in the final Big East regular-season standings.

Leonard suffered a torn ACL in the last game of the season but reconstruction surgery went well and he is rehabbing and looking forward to next season.

Halftime

We've reached the halfway mark of the school year again.

So Sports Notes will take its annual brief break from the action and return in January for more updates on former local athletes competing on the college landscape.

Happy Holidays!!!
