16-year-old Grant student accused of stabbing teen
A 16-year-old Grant High School student is in custody after being accused of stabbing another teen multiple times in the neck and head in the hallway of the Fox Lake high school, authorities said.
Fox Lake police Lt. Mark Schindler said the unidentified student had a “difference of opinion” with the 15-year-old victim about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, pulled out a pointed, wooden “shank” and stabbed him six to eight times from behind.
The victim was taken via ambulance to Centegra Hospital-McHenry, Schindler said, where he was treated and released late Wednesday.
The suspect was taken to the Fox Lake Police Department for questioning, Schindler said. He was later transferred to the Depke Juvenile Justice Center near Vernon Hills after police reviewed possible charges with officials at the Lake County state's attorney's office.
The Daily Herald is not naming the student because of his age.
Charges in juvenile cases are not official until the suspect appears before a Lake County judge in juvenile court. However, Schindler said the possible charges discussed with prosecutors include aggravated battery.
“The stab wounds weren't deep enough to be considered life-threatening,” he said. “However, this could have been a whole lot worse than what it was. This could have been deadly.”
Schindler did not know when the juvenile was expected to appear in front of a Lake County judge. He said the attack remains under investigation.
