Both sides must build strong relationships

A thief who assaulted a business owner and subsequently assaulted and refused to follow a policeman's instructions was killed when confronting that policeman. Does this sound familiar? I don't see how even the most effective "police relations" could have affected this situation. When criminals commit crimes, when they refuse to accept responsibility for their actions and won't follow instructions from law enforcement, there can be and always will be consequences.

Hopefully it is noticed that none of the above mentions race. Let's not forget "relations" has two sides. The community has as much if not more to do while the police keep trying to build trust.
