Des Plaines mayor criticized for panel appointments

Two members of Des Plaines city advisory panels say Mayor Matt Bogusz isn't reappointing them as retribution for positions they've taken against him in the past.

But Bogusz contends politics has nothing to do with it.

The mayor released a list of 18 appointments or reappointments this week that cover a number of boards, from the plan commission to the youth commission.

But it was the absence of certain names on that list that have some in town raising eyebrows.

Mike Lake, the current chairman of the consumer protection commission, wasn't reappointed to the panel on which he's served for 15 years, or chosen for a spot on the library board as he requested. Lake, who is commander of Des Plaines VFW Post 2992, said he believes it's because he criticized Bogusz for lowering flags to half-staff following the death of Alderman Joanna Sojka in August.

“He's a baby. He has no clue what he's doing,” Lake said. “This is just retribution.”

Bob Porada, a member of the zoning board of appeals since 2007, said he believes he wasn't reappointed because he's running for election against 7th Ward Alderman Don Smith, who Bogusz appointed after Sojka's death. Porada also thinks he isn't being asked back because of his criticism of Bogusz's choice for city administrative hearing officer — a position Porada applied for.

Others not being reappointed include library board members Dion Kendrick and Gene Fregetto, who have been critical of library spending policies.

“In each instance, the decision was made after my own reflection on both the position and the person and their performance,” Bogusz said. “I have talked in many cases with their peers and the staff they work with. I think in some cases there are issues with productivity and in some cases with respect. I want to ensure when volunteers give of their time to one of our boards, it's productive and respectful.”

Aldermen are expected to discuss Bogusz's appointments at Monday's city council meeting. They are scheduled to vote on the appointments Dec. 15.
