Teen critically injured in Gurnee crash

Two separate crashes near each other in Gurnee sent nine people to hospitals, including a 13-year-old who was critically injured, police and fire officials said.

Weather likely factored into the crashes that caused one vehicle to roll over just after 4 p.m. on Route 132 on the bridge above I-94, Gurnee police Sgt. Jeremy Gaughan said.

Two of the vehicles collided on top of the bridge and the other two vehicles crashed just east of there on Route 132, Gurnee Fire Batallion Chief Bob Heraver said.

"When we responded, we weren't sure if it was all one incident or two," Heraver said.

Seven ambulances took the nine patients to Condell Medical Center and to Vista East in Waukegan. One patient, a 13-year-old boy, was critically injured while the eight other people did not have life-threatening injuries.

Traffic on Route 132 remained one lane for more than three hours after the crash. Gurnee police handled a few other crashes, also weather-related, Gaughan said.
