Probation for one of 2 in Elgin sex assault case

An Elgin woman accused of not taking "reasonable steps" to prevent her husband from committing sexual abuse recently pleaded guilty to a reduced charge and received probation, according to Kane County court records.

Amanda Alder, 33, of the 100 block of North Jackson Street could be jailed for up to a year if she violates her two years of probation for a misdemeanor child endangerment charge, records show.

Alder was charged in October 2013 with failing to take "reasonable steps to prevent" her husband, Jose L. Alcala, from committing sexual abuse during a several month period from earlier that year, records show.

If convicted of that felony charge, she could have faced up to 15 years in prison.

Judge John Barsanti accepted the guilty plea from Alder in which prosecutors dismissed the most severe charges, records show.

She also must pay $1,630 in fines and fees.

A message left with Alder's defense attorney, Glenn Jazwiec, was not immediately returned.

Alder received two years of probation from a 2008 incident in which she was accused of possession of a firearm near a school, records show.

Alder, who intended to sell a .22 caliber "pen gun," also received 30 days of electronic home monitoring as part of her felony guilty plea, record show.

Alcala, 37, has been held at the Kane County jail on $1 million bond since his arrest in August 2013.

According to court records, he is charged with sexually abusing and sexually assaulting a girl between 13 and 17 that he knew from May 2013 and August 2013, records show.

He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted of criminal sexual assault, of which he held a position of trust and authority over the victim, records show.

He appeared briefly in court this week and his case is next up Dec. 17.
