Palatine councilman resigns, plans to move out of village

Jim Clegg, who's served on the Palatine village council since January 2010, resigned his District 3 seat this week because he is moving out of town.

Clegg said he and his wife, Phyllis, are moving to Elgin next week to downsize now that their kids have moved out and they don't need as much space.

"It's been my goal to meet the needs of the constituents in the village and I tried to do that," said Clegg, who's lived in Palatine for more than 32 years.

Clegg said he's proud that the village has provided great service to residents while staying within its budget during his time on the council.

He first joined the council in 2010, when Mayor Jim Schwantz appointed him to replace former District 3 councilman Dan Varroney, who also moved out of town. Clegg was elected to the seat in 2011.

"He's been an outstanding councilman," Schwantz said Wednesday. "He's served his district and the village extremely well."

Schwantz said he will use the time before the next council meeting on Dec. 1 to find the right candidate to serve the rest of Clegg's term, which ends in May.

"Whoever is named will have some mighty big shoes to fill," Schwantz said.

Clegg's seat is one of three on the council up for election next year. So far, only plan commission member Doug Myslinski has filed nominating petitions with the village clerk to get on the ballot for the seat.

Also filing were a pair of incumbents, District 2 council member Scott Lamerand and District 5 council member Kollin Kozlowski.

Myslinski, who ran for the Palatine Park District Board in 2013, could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Candidates have until Monday, Nov. 24 to file with the village.
