Shaw fires up Hawks; van Riemsdyk to injured reserve

Andrew Shaw's season got off to a sizzling start as the 23-year-old center scored in three of the Blackhawks' first six games.

Since then? Nada. He hasn't scored in 12 games and has just 2 assists over that time.

Well, Sunday at the United Center, Shaw found another way to score - and it came in the form of scoring points with his teammates and his coach during a 30-second throwdown with Dallas' Antoine Roussel.

"I thought the timing was excellent," coach Joel Quenneville said. "Shawzie's probably been looking to do something like that - get it out. The building was alive; we got the momentum back."

The Hawks trailed 2-1 at the time as they allowed back-to-back goals just 39 second aparts. Three-and-a-half minutes later, the gloves were off.

Three minutes after that, Brent Seabrook tied the game on the power play.

"When he does that and kind of gets the crowd into it - you know, you're down 2-1 and you get a fight like that and he's looking at the bench - I think we were just all pumped up and excited," said Patrick Kane, who assisted on Seabrook's goal. "That's how he's going to be an effective player if he plays like that."

The Hawks went on to score 4 goals in the third period and came away with a 6-2 victory, their third in four games.

TVR to LTIR:

The Hawks announced that rookie defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk was placed on long-term injured reserve, which means he'll miss at least 10 games. Van Riemsdyk injured his leg blocking a shot in the first period of Sunday's win over Dallas. The coaching staff was getting more and more comfortable using van Riemsdyk against the other team's top lines and his playing time was steadily increasing as he saw a season-high 21:04 of ice time at Detroit on Friday.

Also Monday, the Hawks called up defenseman Stephen Johns and goalie Antti Raanta. They reassigned forward Joakim Nordstrom and goalie Scott Darling to Rockford. Johns has 5 assists in 16 games with Rockford.

More moves are expected Tuesday as the Hawks prepare for their six-game circus trip that begins Thursday in Calgary.

Tip-ins: Joel Quenneville said he thinks Patrick Sharp, who has missed five games with a knee injury, will begin to skate while the Hawks are on their six-game road trip. "But I'm not exactly sure when that is," Quenneville said. … The Hawks, still No. 1 in the league on the penalty kill, have not allowed a goal in 35 of the last 37 times they've been shorthanded, a 94.6 percent success rate. … Jonathan Toews has recorded at least 1 point in five of the last six games. He leads the team in goals (7), is tied with Brandon Saad in assists (9) and leads in points (16).
