Arlington Hts. man accused of home invasion in repair scam

An Arlington Heights man who authorities say offered to repair a woman's leaky roof, then forced his way into her Rolling Meadows home faces charges of home invasion and aggravated battery to a senior.

A Cook County judge issued a warrant for Stanley Miller's arrest last June. Cook County Judge Joseph Cataldo set his bail at $300,000 on Monday.

Miller, 33, is in Illinois Department of Corrections custody on unrelated charges of burglary and residential burglary.

The accuser in the latest case is an 87-year-old woman who said Miller came to her door on June 8, 2014, offering to repair her leaky roof for $100, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Elizabeth Brogan.

The woman locked the screen door and retreated back into her home for the money, Brogan said. At that point, Brogan said, Miller pushed open the door, shoved the woman against the wall twice, took $1,000 and fled in a vehicle which police traced to his wife.

The woman identified Miller in a photo lineup, Brogan said.

If convicted on the most serious charge, he faces up to 30 years in prison.

Miller's background includes convictions for burglary in 2010 and residential burglary in 2009 for which he was sentenced to 12 and eight years respectively, Brogan said. He was also sentenced to two years in prison for a 2009 retail theft. Miller received probation for a 2005 aggravated home repair fraud.

He next appears in court on Dec. 15.
