Local Elk Grove Village Resident Recipient of Scholarship!

Robin Redmond, Executive Director of the George M. Pullman Educational Foundation, announces Olivia Fritz, who graduated from the Elk Grove High School is amongst the 161 Pullman Foundation Scholarship awardees for the 2014-2015 school year - Olivia is studying at Stanford University.

Of the total number of students currently receiving funding, forty are new, recent graduates from high schools throughout Cook County who are cohorts of the 65th Class of Pullman Scholars. Since 1950, the Pullman Foundation has awarded $30 million in scholarships, thereby enabling over 12,000 scholars in the Cook County area to attend accredited colleges or universities throughout the U.S. Comments Ms. Redmond, "We believe education is an essential component of an individual's success, regardless of one's origin or background. George Pullman epitomized opportunity and possibility, and this is what we wish for every Pullman Scholar - we provide our scholars with tangible and intangible assets to help them achieve their American Dream."

Pullman Scholars are undergraduate students who are motivated to succeed academically, have strong professional goals, and strive to be leaders in their communities, but may not have sufficient resources to pursue their dreams. Pullman Scholars can be found at 66 different colleges, including Northwestern University, University of Chicago, Howard University, DePaul University, Vanderbilt University, Carleton College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Illinois.

Railroad magnate George M. Pullman, a 19th century American industrialist, is best known as the inventor of the Pullman Palace Car, a luxury sleeping car for train travel. More recently, the Pullman neighborhood in Chicago, which George Pullman built to be a company town, is seeking national park status to preserve and denote its role in America's labor movement.
