Elk Grove District 59 early learning center construction set to begin

Construction will begin this month on an $18 million, 55,000-square-foot building addition at Holmes Junior High in Mount Prospect to accommodate Elk Grove Township Elementary District 59's early learning center.

Crews will be preparing the site for construction, mass grading, foundations and concrete pads, along with utility work and the erection of structural steel. The school board this week approved contracts worth just under $5 million for that work.

The board could vote as early as next month on a contract for construction of the building itself. Separating the work into phases allows site work to begin before winter, while interior designs are still being developed, district officials said. The final phase could cost about $13 million.

The entire project was initially estimated to cost $14.3 million, but stormwater management and bad soil conditions have led to rising costs, officials said.

The facility is targeted for an August 2015 opening.
