Government not perfect, but it's not 'broken'

After all the negative campaigning during this election, the news that Gettysburg hero 1st Lt. Alonzo H. Cushing was given the Medal of Honor 151 years after his death was a breath of fresh air. It is because of patriots like him that President Obama was elected as the first president of color in our nation.

With only a third of the voters voting in this election, it appears we Americans are sour with our government. Every time we have elections, I hear many say our government is broken. I beg to differ! Could someone name any democratically elected government where its constituents say it is working perfectly? Democracies work in a way where people are encouraged to debate and have their opinions.

As citizens, we need to look for ways to help our country. Therefore, it is important for citizens to vote in large numbers so issues could be resolved and government works the way its constituents want - a real government for the people!

So please stop saying our government is broken. Just like Alonzo Cushing, let us do our part in making this country a better place. Due to our nation's democratic roots, freedom and prosperity, we must not forget that this nation is still a choice of thousands of people who want to migrate for a better life.
