Elgin man shot in hand on way to party

A 24-year-old Elgin man was shot early Sunday morning while getting out of his vehicle on the way to a party, police said.

Elgin police said they responded to the 300 block of Jewett Street at approximately 12:43 a.m. after a report of several shots fired in the area. After arriving, officers learned that the man had been struck in the hand.

Police said the man left the shooting scene on his own then knocked on a door about a block away and asked that someone there call for help for him. He was taken to Presence Saint Joseph for a nonlife threatening injury.

Detectives from Elgin's Police Department's Gang Crimes Unit are investigating the shooting and asking anyone with information to contact them at (847) 289-2646.
