Info sought on suspicious fire in Batavia field

Batavia fire officials believe someone intentionally set the fire that burned about 10 acres of cornfields and marsh off Randall Road.

The fire was reported around 10 p.m. Wednesday. It was southwest of the Sam's Club store, 501 N. Randall Road.

The fire covered about 6 acres when firefighters arrived, but grew to 10 acres due to 20 mph winds, with gusts of up to 35 mph, out of the southwest. The fire spread toward the Sam's Club.

No buildings or people were damaged.

"Although there was no dollar loss from this fire, it did tie up fire department personnel and resources from Elburn, Geneva and Batavia fire departments for an extended length of time, and could have spread to the surrounding businesses if not caught in time," Deputy Chief Randy Banker said in a prepared statement.

The corn had been harvested, but stalks and chaffs were still in the field.
