Overhaul in works for Mount Prospect shopping center?

The year 2015 could be one of change for the Golf Plaza II shopping center in Mount Prospect.

The owners of the property, which sits at the southwest corner of Golf and Elmhurst roads, have met with village officials to talk about a redevelopment of the site, Mount Prospect Community Development Director Bill Cooney said.

So far, the discussions are in preliminary stages. However, Cooney said that a formal development proposal could be submitted before the end of the year.

“We would love to see something by then,” he said. “That would mean we could get something done in 2015.”

Representatives of DiMucci Companies, owner of the property, could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Golf Plaza II features more than 176,000 square feet of retail space, according to the DiMucci website. Its current tenants are a mix of national retailers, like Walgreens, and service providers, like Alexian Urgent Care.

The center took a big hit when its anchor tenant, Dominick's Food Store, closed last year. The store's 58,000-square-foot space remains empty. “A number of grocery chains have looked at that location, but none of them took the bait, so to speak,” Cooney said.

A well-designed redevelopment of the shopping center could be a big success because it's located at such a visible and highly traveled intersection, Cooney said. The intersection also serves as an entry point into the village.

“There are some intriguing long-term possibilities there,” Cooney said. “For now, we have to see what they come up with.”
